Fiber dryer

What is a Fiber Dryer?

  • Definition: A fiber dryer uses heat (via hot air, steam) to reduce moisture content in fibers.

  • Purpose: Ensures fibers reach the right dryness for spinning, weaving, pressing, or blending.

  • Industries: Common in textiles, paper manufacturing, composites, and food processing (e.g., drying starch or fiber-rich ingredients).

  • The dryer shall have multiple drums heated
with saturated steam. All the fiber tows will
be passed over the steam heated drums to
provide the desired length and residence time
    for drying, stretching and thermo-relaxation.

• Rollers inside the dryer shall be

drive to all
• the driven rollers shall be through gear

• arrangement for fiber forwarding.
• Electrical drive system shall be
operated using
• Variable Frequency Drive
• (VFD)/Servomotor.
• All the rollers should rotate without any
wobbling (eccentricity along the axis of
rotation should be 0.1 mm max),
oscillation,vibration .

• Drums shall be heated upto 170°C (surface
temp. of rotating drum) through steam.
• All the drums shall have independent
control for steam pressure.
• Pressure regulating valve (PRV) shall be
used to reduce pressure of steam before
feeding to drums and then steam shall be
supplied to the drums through steam
control valve to control the temperature of
drums.
• System should be designed for economic
utilization of steam.
• The steam condensed within the drum
dryer and drained from the dryer by
suitably designed syphons, steam trap etc.
• Design of syphons for maximum
condensate removal at all operating speed.
• Condensate shall be collected in
Condensate Collection Tank and pump to
Utility Block.
• Provision for Automatic air removal shall be
made in the condensate system to ensure
the correct evacuation of air from the drum

Dryer housing:

- dryer body material

Steel resistant to dryer interior and environmental media AISI 304 stainless steel

- dryer interior material

Stainless steel

- dryer exterior material

Stainless steel

- casing tightness

Suitably sealed

- harness separation device at the outlet

horizontally fixed rod with perpendicular to its axis guides in the form of rods and/or discs sliding, if necessary, along the rod and fixed manually in the set position. The rod is placed after the output roller at the fibre bundles' exit from the dryer. The guides on the rod separate the fibre bundles and prevent the outermost bundles from sliding over the perforation edge of the drum

Dryer frame

The dryer support frame and dryer frame parts must be made of profiled steel with an anti-corrosion coating resistant to water vapour, dimethylformamide, acetic acid at operating temperature parameters inside the dryer. Stainless steel AISI 304

Dryer drums

- Perforated drums shall be made of stainless steel with a surface finish so clean as to prevent snagging and breakage of elementary fibres and to prevent the formation of fibre windings on the drum. Each drum shall be equipped with a safety device to detect fibre winding. Stainless steel AISI 304

- To limit air intake in the area where the harness does not pass, a sector shall be installed inside each drum to limit air intake with a cleaning hatch.

- Each drum module shall have upper and lower pressure chambers. The pressure chambers shall have perforated plates for uniform air supply to the drum. The plates shall be removable.

- A metal guide profile shall be installed on both sides of each drum to guide the harnesses and prevent them from slipping off the drum.

- Each drum shall be equipped with a wrinkle detector (winding sensor), which ensures activation of light and sound signalling, blocking of electric motors with drum indication on the local control panel.

- For visual control of the fibre bundles passage in the dryer, each drum must be equipped with lighting fixtures with backlight lamp (energy saving class -AB) with 24 V supply voltage and sight glasses. Switching on/off the lights shall be done from outside.

- The drum shaft shall be connected to the drum drive by means of a transmission on the side opposite to the fan, the choice of transmission type is at the discretion of the manufacturing plant (chain, coupling, etc.).

- The first three drums and the last three drums shall be fitted with reinforced drives to ensure tensioning of the fibre bundles.

- All dryer drums shall be interchangeable

Heaters made of finned steel pipes with high heat exchange capacity must be installed to heat the circulating air; removable stainless steel screens must be installed in front of each heater to protect the heater from fibre clogging.

- Inlet guide (with drive) and outlet guide (without drive) rollers shall have a hard wear-resistant polished coating and a safety device to prevent workers' hands from entering the dryer housing.

- The impellers of the circulation and exhaust fans must be made of steel and factory balanced to a vibration velocity of no more than 2.5 mm/sec.

- The circulation fan impeller together with the electric drive must form a single module interchangeable on all dryer drums.

- The sealing of the shaft of the circulation and exhaust fans at the point of passage through the casing must prevent the escape of the vapour-air mixture to the outside.

In the case of two or more points of removal of moist air from the dryer by one terminal fan, adjustable dampers must be installed on the exhaust air ducts, which must be controlled remotely from the on-site dryer control panel.

- The inside diameter of the connections must be equal to the inside diameter of the mating flanges.

- The length of the studs (bolts) must ensure that the threaded part exceeds the nut by at least 1.5 thread pitch.

- Shut-off and regulating valves included in the delivery set of the dryer, on material execution, tightness of the gate and other characteristics must correspond to the physical and chemical properties of the transported product, its operating parameters.

- Parts of the valve that are not in contact with the process medium must be made of material resistant to environmental conditions.

- All valves must be flanged.

- Seal designs. Material of gaskets must ensure the required degree of tightness of the split connection during the overhaul period of operation of the process medium.

- Valve body material should be equivalent to pipe material.

- Material of pipelines and pipeline components, wall thickness should correspond to chemical and physical properties and technological parameters of transported media.

- Electropneumatic positioners, pressure reducers with filters, mating flanges, gaskets and mounting hardware with complete pneumatic pipework must be supplied with the control valves.

- The dryer must be supplied complete with power supply and control panel.
